Material estrangement
the gradual drift toward disconnection, unfamiliarity, and weakening intimacy from the material world and one's own material nature
 

In a contemporary culture of digital mediation—where interfaces become increasingly digitized, bodily contact is displaced by screens, and the origins, behaviors, and afterlives of materials fade from everyday knowledge—our physical, relational sense of the material world quietly slips into a deeper, stranger obscurity... this is the condition of material estrangement. 
 

It is rooted in sensing, the physical body, psychology, and the principles of material relations. It is a signal from our bodily intuition... a reminder for us to not lose ourselves in our own evolution. To find moments to be close to the material world we are apart of, and to wonder about it. 

Naming, creating, and thinking around this growing condition of contemporary society serves as a critique and observation of something happening now, intensifying, and doing so quietly. 

 

Strange materiality
More materials exist now than ever before, and humans are more surrounded by them than ever before. Our evolving material world, increasingly synthetic, technological, and ubiquitous. The things we are most surrounded by have become the things we are the most unfamiliar with. We are surrounded by things we do not know well. And increasingly, we are surrounded by more and more of these strange and unfamiliar things. Not even just surrounded. Permeated. They enter our bodies... and stay. We are becoming them.
